I wrote in my journal, “… there are these parts of me, light and dark, love and coldness, hope and despair. It can’t co-exist and eventually crashes all together.”

Is this what scripture means about flesh and spirit? Do other people feel this way?

Whatever is the opposite of wanderlust, that is me. Since I can remember, I have wanted to buy a home with a big porch and live in the same neighborhood until I die.

Instead, I participate in what my parents fondly(?) refer to as “the annual move.”

Imagine the scene. The table is set with food. Jesus, Simon, and the other guests are reclined about the table, eating their meal. The Pharisees are, as always, on the lookout for evidence of the way Jesus disrupts their world and order.

Public protest and free speech are protected under the law, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences. There are days when it feels like you can’t win. If you stay silent, you might find yourself on the wrong side of history.

Erica Garner’s heart attacked her. A heart that mothered and sistered. A heart that fought tirelessly for her people.

Growing up in church, Proverbs 4:23 was quoted to me like it were a commandment. “Guard your heart” was chanted from pulpit to purity class.

With the passing of Valentine’s Day, for me and many others, the difficult season is finally over.

I know that’s a stereotypical response from someone who is single. But I really need you to hear me out here.
